Lynne Cohen was born in the Unites States in 1944 and has lived in Canada since 1973. For some four decades she has been photographing uninhabited public and private interiors focusing on the strangeness and contradictions in the everyday world. She has had many solo and group exhibitions, including retrospectives in Canada, France and Switzerland. Besides individual and group catalogues, she has six monographs to her name: Occupied Territory (Aperture), L'endroit du décor / Lost and Found (FRAC-Limousin), No Man's Land (Thames and Hudson), Camouflage, Cover (both Le Point du Jour) and Lynne Cohen (Dazibao/Vu). In 2005 she received the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts (Canada) and in 2011 was the first winner of the Scotiabank Photography Award. A new edition of Occupied Territory and two other books, Nothing is Hidden (Steidl) and Tender Puentes/Kindred Spirits (Pamplona), are slated to appear in 2012.
